CineStill 800T Review: The Night Photography Film

CineStill 800T is the most requested color film in our shop, and it is one of the stocks we develop most often in our Brooklyn lab. It is a tungsten-balanced, EI 800 color negative film built from Kodak motion picture stock, and it is the reason a whole generation of photographers associate film with red halos glowing around streetlights. Almost every roll that comes back to our counter was shot after dark. This review covers what the film actually is, how the halation happens, how to meter it, what it does in daylight, how it stacks up against Portra 800, and what it costs to get developed. We have also laid out a full gallery of sample frames with the settings that produced them.
What Makes CineStill 800T Different
Start with where the film comes from. CineStill 800T is a still-photography adaptation of Kodak's VISION3 500T motion picture negative, the 5219 stock that has shot an enormous share of the night exteriors you have seen in theaters. Kodak builds 5219 for the ECN-2 cinema process and coats it with a rem-jet backing, a black, carbon-loaded anti-halation layer bonded to the back of the film base. Rem-jet is why cinema negative cannot go through a normal photo lab: it dissolves into the chemistry, contaminates the tanks, and coats the rollers. It is the single reason respooled cinema film has a bad reputation among labs.
CineStill's contribution is a proprietary process they call Premoval, which strips the rem-jet off the base before the film is spooled into cassettes. Two things follow from that. First, the film becomes genuinely safe to run in any standard C-41 machine, including ours, with no special handling and no separate line. Second, the anti-halation protection is gone, and that is where the look comes from.
Halation is straightforward physics. A very bright point of light passes through the emulsion, reaches the back of the clear acetate base, and reflects back up into the emulsion instead of being absorbed. That returning light re-exposes the area immediately around the highlight. In a color film the red-sensitive layer takes the brunt of it, so the extra exposure prints as a warm red-orange bloom that rings streetlights, headlights, neon tubes, and window reflections. Every color film shows a trace of this. On 800T, with nothing to stop it, it becomes the signature.
The third piece is color balance. 800T is balanced for 3200K tungsten light, not the 5500K daylight that essentially every other color negative on the shelf is built for. Daylight film under sodium and incandescent light goes orange and muddy and loses effective speed. 800T is built with the blue sensitivity to hold those scenes at their real color, which is why it does not need the two-plus stops of extra exposure that daylight stock needs indoors. CineStill rates it at EI 800 rather than Kodak's EI 500 for the cinema original, a decision they say came out of sensitometric testing after Premoval rather than marketing. In our experience developing it, box speed is honest.

Two clarifications on formats. 800T has never had a permanent large-format run. CineStill produced a limited-edition 800T in 4x5 out of a 2016 crowdfunding campaign, and it is long gone; 400D is the emulsion that got the permanent 4x5 slot. And the DX coding applies only to 35mm, so if you are shooting 120 you are setting the speed yourself. We stock CineStill 800T in both 35mm and 120 at $18 a roll.
Night Streets, Neon, and Concerts
This film has one job and it does it better than anything else in production. If the light source in your frame is artificial and the sun is down, 800T is the answer.
Night street photography is the obvious case. A shop window on Grand Street, a bodega awning, headlights coming up Metropolitan at 9pm: those are all tungsten, sodium, and LED sources, and 800T reads them as the warm pools of light your eye actually sees rather than the orange sludge you get from Portra after dark. Rate it at 800, meter for the lit areas rather than the shadows, and let the black fall away.
Neon is where it becomes unfair. Saturated red and magenta tubes are exactly the kind of small, intense, monochromatic highlight that triggers halation hardest, so the sign glows past its own edges. If you have been searching for the best film for neon lights, this is the end of the search. New York is full of practical subjects for it, and living here is a real advantage: the Williamsburg Bridge from the Domino Park side, the Wythe Hotel sign, late-night diners on Metropolitan, the sodium wash under the BQE, subway platforms at Bedford and Lorimer. Our staff shoot the neighborhood on this stock constantly.
It also handles interiors better than anything at this speed. Bars, restaurants, apartment kitchens, anywhere the light is a bare bulb or a warm LED. And concerts, with a caveat: stage lighting is a wild mix of color temperatures, and 800T will not neutralize it, it will render it. That is usually what you want. For a night-out camera, the compact autofocus bodies in our point-and-shoot collection pair naturally with it, since their flashes are close to the film's balance and their fast lenses stay usable at EI 800.
These are frames shot and developed in-house, with the settings that made them. Read the captions before the images; the exposure decision matters more than the camera on this stock.

Settings: Metering, Cameras, and Daylight
Rate it at 800 and meter for the highlights. That is the opposite of the advice you have heard for color negative film, and it is deliberate. Night scenes have no shadow detail to protect, only pools of light. If you meter for the shadows the way you would with Portra, you will overexpose the lit areas by two or three stops, blow the halation into an unrecoverable smear, and lose the deep blacks that make the frame read as night. Point the meter at the illuminated part of the scene and expose for that.
For cameras, anything with a fast lens works. A 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 on an SLR gets you handheld at 1/30 to 1/60 on most lit streets. Compacts with an f/2.8 lens are fine under signage and marginal on a dark block. A tripod plus a normal lens opens up long-exposure cityscapes, where reciprocity failure on this stock is mild enough that a few extra seconds covers it. Our film collection and the rest of our used inventory turn over constantly, so come in and we will pair a body to the way you shoot.
Then there is the daylight question, which is the most common thing we get asked at the counter. 800T is balanced for 3200K. Shoot it under a 5500K sun with no correction and the image comes back cool, blue in the highlights, and slightly teal in the greens and browns. It is not broken, it is a look, and a lot of people shoot it that way on purpose. If you want neutral color instead, put an 85B conversion filter on the lens. The 85B is the amber filter designed to convert 5500K daylight down to 3200K, it costs you about two-thirds of a stop, and the standard move is to meter at EI 500 with it mounted. Some shooters prefer an 85C for a lighter, partial correction that keeps some coolness. Either way, decide before you load, because you cannot filter half a roll and fix the rest later without a fight in scanning.

Against Portra 800, the comparison is not really about quality. Portra 800 is the better-behaved film: finer grain, wider latitude, genuinely excellent skin tones, and it pushes cleanly to 1600. If you are shooting a wedding reception or paid portrait work in mixed light and you need reliable, correctable color, buy Portra 800 and do not think about it again. But take Portra 800 into a bar at midnight and it will come back warm and flat, because it is reading tungsten light through a daylight-balanced emulsion. 800T will not, and it will hand you the halation on top. Different tools.
Lomography Color Negative 800 is the budget entry. It is daylight balanced, C-41, available in 35mm and 120, usually sold in three-packs, and it is the cheapest way to get an 800-speed roll into a camera. It is a fine film. It is not a substitute for either of the other two: it has none of 800T's tungsten balance or halation, and it does not match Portra's latitude or grain. We do not stock it, so if you want to try it you will be ordering elsewhere.
The honest summary: if the light in your scene is artificial, 800T wins and nothing else is close. If the light is daylight or flash and you care about accurate skin, Portra 800 is the safer choice every time.
Developing and Pushing CineStill 800T
Because the rem-jet is already gone, there is nothing special about developing this film. It runs as standard C-41, in the same machine, on the same line, as your Gold 200. No pre-wash, no separate handling, no surcharge. If a lab tells you they cannot take CineStill or charges you extra for it, they are thinking of raw respooled cinema stock, which is a different thing entirely.
In our Brooklyn lab, standard developing is $18 per roll for 35mm or 120 as of August 2026, with a 4K scan upgrade at $12, and typical turnaround is four to five business days. Push and pull processing are both on the menu. Members pay $16 a roll, and membership starts at $18 a month. We take mail-in from anywhere in the world. Full details are on our film processing page.
One thing to get right: if you shot the roll at anything other than 800, write the EI on the canister and tell us at drop-off. Push processing is a development-time change we make before your roll goes in, and we cannot infer it from the negative afterward. A roll shot at EI 1600 and developed normally comes back thin and disappointing, and there is no fixing it later. Note it, and we will run it correctly.

Can CineStill 800T be pushed?
Yes. CineStill rates it for push processing up to three stops, giving a usable range of roughly EI 1600 to 3200. One stop to 1600 is the practical sweet spot for concerts and very dark streets. Expect higher contrast, blocked-up shadows and heavier grain as you push further.
Can any lab develop CineStill 800T?
Any lab that offers C-41 can develop it, with no special handling required, because the rem-jet layer that contaminates processing machines has already been removed at the factory. That is the entire point of CineStill's Premoval process. Raw respooled motion picture film without that treatment is a different story.
Does CineStill 800T come in 4x5?
Not currently. 800T is made in 35mm, in DX-coded 36-exposure cassettes, and in 120 roll film. A limited-edition 4x5 run came out of a 2016 crowdfunding campaign and has long since sold out. CineStill 400D is the emulsion with a permanent large-format sheet option.
The Verdict
CineStill 800T earns the hype, with a narrow definition of what it is for. It is the only true 800-speed tungsten-balanced film in production for still photography, it renders artificial light the way your eye sees it, and the halation is a genuinely distinctive optical signature rather than a filter effect anyone can copy in an app. A
It is also a specialist. Shooting it in daylight without an 85B is a stylistic choice, not a general-purpose one, and if you want accurate color in sunlight there are better and cheaper films. Buy it for the nights.
