Got an Open Board SX-70 2 from Brooklyn Film Camera recently and it works incredibly well. It handles Reclaimed Purple 600 and black & white film beautifully, especially during dusk and twilight hours. Over the years, I've used them for various services. They’ve restored several of my old SX-70s to working, serviceable condition so they act just like the originals, and I’ve bought a few 600 cameras from them in the past too. I use a lot of Polaroid film, so I always make sure to grab five or four cartridges from BFC just for fun. Taking it outdoors to photograph people on a bright sunny day is the best. The camera is fun, workable, and just really nice to shoot. Solid shop and great work.

Very cool store with friendly and helpful staff. Came in to trade in an old polaroid camera and bought myself a fully serviced and refurbished SX 70 sonar. They had a very impressive selection of products and provide a variety of services. Also has a fun vintage photo booth inside.
For background I have been shooting my old SX70 for about 6 years. I had come across BFC through their Polaroid repair work and was impressed by the shops quality and service reliability. (I used my SX70 across well over a dozen countries with a lot of rough travel and BFC has done two great tune ups of it for me!) So when it came time to move to 35mm I went with BFC's rec and got the K1000. I am still a week into shooting on this camera and I am yet to develop my rolls, but I have been impressed both by the process of getting the camera from BFC (it came carefully packaged and ahead of schedule), and the camera itself. I am anticipating a steep learning curve to figure out how to fully utilize the additional capabilities of the K1000 relative to my sx70--but the shooting experience is lovely. The shutter has a very satisfying click and the winding wheel is similar object of audio-delight. The viewfinder is nice and large and the lightmeter is responsive. Its a fun camera--excited for it to be my first in this new phase.
BFC restored a Polaroid SX-70 Sonar camera that my dad gave me and did an incredible job. It's now working wonderfully! They even put on new leather and cleaned it very well which was a pleasant surprise. It truly looks like new. Which is just such a treat for a beautiful camera. I highly suggest anyone who needs their Polaroid camera restored to send it to them. The store itself is so warm and welcoming too. Between the backyard, lounge and the gallery.. it feels like visiting a friends house. ☺️
Sent my favorite Polaroid SX70 and they took expert care of her, fixed the viewfinder and completed a full diagnostic and checked all the mechanics, then tested her again. Loved the updates and cannot wait to put her to use!
got my sx70 fixed there and they do replace the bottom patch of leather but it matches the tone/color of the other leather so no problem here

Sent my SX-70 in to be refurbished, reskinned and converted to use Polaroid 600 film! Haven’t had any issues yet! Customer service is fast too! Most questions you can think of, these guys can answer! As long as you don’t get too philosophical with it, if you ask them what the meaning to life the universe, and well, everything is… they’ll probably just say 42.
BFC is the absolute best when it comes to Polaroids and film photography. They repaired my SX70 in just a few days, and it looks brand stinkingly new! Works like it too. Everyone there has been accommodating and knowledgeable. So helpful to have this community in Brooklyn.

Visited the shop in September and it ruled. Zero snobbery, just a warm & welcoming place for film photography dorks. I got my original SX-70 fully restored and converted to shoot 600 film. The service was better than expected, and my camera got to me sparkling and ready to rock. There’s lots of people out there claiming to offer similar services, but I can’t imagine trusting anyone but BFC!

I rarely write reviews, but it is definitely worth mentioning how great the service at BFC is. I had the pleasure of talking with Claire, and she made sure to answer all of my questions, offer the best options for my SX-70's repair, and was transparent with me every step of the way. I opted to have the 600 conversion done, as well as the reskinning of the leather, and everything exceeded my expectations. My camera also needed to have the film door replaced, but Claire had let me know well in advance that there was a great possibility of that. The camera works phenomenally and I am so happy with having worked with BFC. Huge thank you to the team, and a special thank you to Claire for being so patient with me!

I sent Julian at Brooklyn Film Camera my SX-70 for restoration and man, he did an absolutely fantastic job. It came back looking far better than I had hoped for and it works like new despite being older than I am. ... I guess I have to admit I wouldn't know how it worked when it was new, but never mind that. It works great! On top of this, they turned around the work faster than I expected and kept me up to date. If you're pondering a restoration then I say go with Brooklyn Film Camera. The price is extremely reasonable considering the quality of the service.

What film does an SX-70 use?
Ours take both Polaroid SX-70 film and 600 film, thanks to the OpenSX70 board. SX-70 film gives softer, warmer color; 600 film is faster and handles dimmer light.
Which SX-70 model should I choose?
The Original and Model 2 are the classic manual-focus cameras: you turn the focus wheel while looking through the lens. The Alpha 1 and Alpha 1 Model 2 add a tripod socket and strap lugs. The Sonar focuses for you.
Is the SLR 680 an SX-70?
It is a later relative with the same folding design, plus a built-in flash and autofocus. It takes 600 film.
What is the difference between an SX-70 and a Polaroid 600?
A Polaroid 600 is a fixed-focus point-and-shoot. An SX-70 folds flat, lets you focus through the lens and gives you more control over exposure.
How old is the Polaroid SX-70?
Polaroid introduced the SX-70 in 1972, so every SX-70 camera is more than 40 years old. That is why we refurbish each one in Brooklyn before we sell it, and fit it with an OpenSX70 board. Each camera comes with a 6-month warranty.
Is SX-70 film discontinued?
No. Polaroid still makes SX-70 film in color and in black and white, and we stock both. Each pack has 8 shots. Because our SX-70 cameras have an OpenSX70 board, they also take Polaroid 600 film, which is easier to find in stores.
Why is SX-70 film so expensive?
Each pack costs about $27 for 8 shots, so a photo costs a little over $3. Every frame holds its own developing chemicals, and every pack holds the battery that powers the camera. You get a finished print in minutes, with no lab and no scanning.
Does an SX-70 need batteries?
No. The battery is inside every pack of SX-70 and 600 film, so a new pack powers the camera. If an SX-70 does not turn on, try a fresh pack first, then clean the battery contacts inside the film door.
How much is a Polaroid SX-70 worth?
On our shelf right now, refurbished SX-70s cost about $540 for the Original to about $715–$735 for the Sonar, and the SLR 680 costs $1,200. Untested cameras sell for less, but many need repair. Our SX-70 buyer's guide compares the models. If you have one to sell, we buy cameras too.

Six folding cameras, nine years, a handful of naming conventions that can make the whole lineup feel a bit confusing, here is the timeline and featured simply laid out.
First, two generations
Original-gen & Alpha-gen
Polaroid released the SX-70 in 1972. Five years later, in 1977, they refined it with the Alpha 1 — adding strap lugs, a tripod socket, and a brighter viewfinder. Everything after is a variation on one of these two bodies.
Then, two trim levels
Premium & Model 2
Within each generation, Polaroid offered a premium trim (chrome-plated metal body, real leather) and a budget trim called the Model 2 (plastic body, vinyl covering). The optics and mechanics are identical — only the shell differs.
