What a CLA costs, what a repair costs, and when neither one is worth it.

Most film camera repair costs land in one of two bands. Specific fixes like light seal replacement, a stuck shutter, or unjamming a film advance run $80–120. A full CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) on a common 35mm SLR like a Canon AE-1 or Pentax K1000 runs $225–325, and comes with a three-month warranty on our work. Lens CLAs start at $125.

Those numbers are the whole reason this page exists. The most common question we get at the repair bench isn't "can you fix it," it's "what's this going to cost me," and almost nobody will answer that in public. So here's our pricing, model by model, along with the part most shops leave out: when the repair isn't worth doing at all.

What a CLA Actually Is

CLA stands for Clean, Lubricate, Adjust. It is the closest thing a mechanical film camera has to a full service.

A CLA sometimes fixes a specific problem, but that isn't really its job. Its job is preventative: get the camera back to reliable working order and keep it there for years. Old lubricant turns to varnish, foam light seals crumble into black goo, and shutter speeds drift slow without anyone noticing until the negatives come back thin.

Depending on the camera, a CLA usually includes:

• Light seal replacement to prevent light leaks and protect film
• Lubrication of moving parts, including the mirror mechanism and other areas prone to wear
• Shutter magnet evaluation and replacement if needed
• Shutter speed testing and fine-tuning for accuracy
• Light meter evaluation and calibration checks

During a CLA our technicians inspect the camera inside and out, clearing away old lubricants, dust, and residue. The winding action usually smooths out, jams get less likely, and delicate components stop wearing against grit.

One thing that trips people up: CLA services are separate for camera bodies and lenses. A body CLA doesn't touch your glass. If your focus ring is stiff or there's haze in the elements, that's a lens CLA, priced separately below.

Light seals deserve a specific mention, because they're the single most common thing wrong with a camera that "mostly works." Foam seals from the 1970s and 1980s have a shelf life measured in decades, and they're all past it. If you're getting orange or magenta streaks along one edge of your frames, that's almost certainly a $80–120 fix and not a dead camera.

Lens CLA and Repair Pricing

Lenses are priced by complexity, not by badge. A 50mm prime is a 50mm prime whether it says Zuiko or Rokkor on the front.

A lens CLA starts with removing the mount and front elements. Grime and oil come off from under the mount, each accessible element gets cleaned of fungus, haze, and dust where possible, and the helicoids are stripped of old grease and re-greased. The aperture is checked for sluggishness, and if the blades are slow, each one is removed and soaked to clear the oil. On reassembly we confirm the aperture fully opens and closes and that focus still hits infinity correctly.

The honest caveat on fungus: we can clean it, but if it's been growing long enough to etch the coating, cleaning removes the organism and leaves the scar. We'll tell you which one you have before we charge you for it.

Getting a lens serviced alongside a body CLA is usually the better value. Bundled with a Canon AE-1 or Pentax K1000 body CLA, a standard lens adds $50–100 rather than the full standalone rate. Browse our 35mm lenses if you would rather put that money toward better glass instead.

What We Can and Cannot Service

What we service:

• Nearly all lenses
• Many 1970s–1990s mechanical SLRs with jams, stuck shutters, and similar faults
• Light seal replacement on nearly any camera
• Exterior parts replacement on most cameras

Where it gets complicated: electrical issues are model-dependent. We are not currently offering full service repairs for the Contax TVS series, the Fuji GA series, or other electronically complex cameras. This is case by case, so it is still worth an email to repairs@brooklynfilmcamera.com.

Not eligible for a standard CLA:

• Impact damage
• Torn or ripped shutter curtains
• Moisture or extensive water damage
• Bent shutter blades
• Sand or fine dirt contamination
• Any other major damage beyond normal wear and aging

These aren't automatic rejections. They just leave CLA territory and become a normal repair quote, because the work stops being predictable.

When a Repair Is Not Worth It

This is the part that costs us money to say out loud.

Sometimes the cost of a repair exceeds the cost of simply buying a comparable replacement. A common 1980s SLR that needs a full CLA plus a parts replacement can easily total more than a tested, warrantied body off our shelf. We'll tell you that before you commit, not after.

A rough way to think about it:

• Repair it if the camera is worth meaningfully more than the quote, if parts are still available, or if it belonged to someone and the math was never the point. Sentimental cameras are the best reason to spend $300 on a $150 body, and we service plenty of them.
• Replace it if the quote approaches the market value of a serviced example, if the fault is electrical on a model we can't source parts for, or if it's one camera among several you own and rarely reach for.

How to Start a Repair

The process is the same whether you are in Brooklyn or not.

Not through this process. Polaroid cameras are an entirely different system and go through our Polaroid restorations service, including full SX-70 rebuilds.
