            About Film

Film for every format we stock: 35mm, 120, instant, Super 8 and 4x5, from Kodak, Ilford, Fujifilm, Cinestill and Polaroid. Whether it's your first roll or you're stocking up for a trip, it's all here. When you're done shooting, we develop and scan it too: drop your rolls at the shop or mail them in.

Can you still get film for older cameras?

Yes, for most of them. 35mm, 120, instant, Super 8 and 110 film are all still made. Rarer formats such as 127 and 620 come from small makers or as respooled 120. A few, like 126 and Disc film, are no longer made.

Which film does my camera take?

Most SLRs, rangefinders and point-and-shoots take 35mm film. Medium format cameras take 120. Polaroid cameras take 600, SX-70, i-Type or GO film, and Instax cameras take Instax. Pocket cameras take 110, and home movie cameras take Super 8. The format is often printed inside the film door.

            Does film expire?

Yes. Each box has a date. Film shot soon after it usually looks fine; older film can shift color, lose contrast and get grainier. Keep film in the fridge and let it warm up before you load it. Some people shoot expired film on purpose for the look.

Can film go through airport security?

Carry film in your hand luggage, never in checked bags, because checked-bag scanners can fog it. Most film under ISO 800 is fine through a carry-on X-ray, but newer CT scanners are stronger. For ISO 800 and up, or film you care about, ask for a hand check.

Where can I get film developed?

Our Brooklyn lab develops 35mm, 120, 110 and Super 8, in color, black and white and slide. Developing and scanning a 35mm or 120 roll costs $18, or $16 for members, with a typical turnaround of 4–5 days. Drop it off or mail it in.
